Online Poker- Some Mistakes Beginners Commit in Poker

You aim to have fun and win a good amount of cash when you play online poker. When you are a green apple in the game, you tend to make some mistakes which may get the players on the table to raise some brows or may get you out of your cash.

We made a simple list for you to browse and know what mistakes you commit when playing online poker games and what you should avoid:

Playing any hand you have

Play and enjoy the game but you need to learn what is the acceptable starting hand for you. Do you think it will be wise to play a 3 Spade with a 4 Diamond?

Jumping over your bankroll

Anything that is too much is not good for you. If you play greedy poker online or play way above your budget can afford, count a few months and you will be declared a bankrupt. Know your limits and stick to what you can afford.

Declare and change

Like chess, online poker real money is a game of integrity. Declare “raise” and you should raise. Say “call” and you mean to call. Your first action is your final action. Play by the etiquette and you will win more than chips while on the poker table.

Mimicking other players

Imitate professional players you see on the television and you may end up getting their bad habits as well. Online poker India is a game where your own decision and habits will count. Your call will win your games and your behavior will be your wall against the other players.

Loving too much the suited cards

Suited cards are nice but you need to know how to value your cards. An Ace and a King of different suits are far more valuable than a ten and two of hearts. Remember there is a very low probability for a flush.

Poker Online Strategy – Prepare for Your Best Game

While this is hard at first, advanced players must figure out which game they play best and why. Different games and different certain betting structures require different skills. Since winning at poker online means having a higher level of skill in areas, a true winner should know why he is winning in order to maximize his advantage over his opponents.

We cannot tell you which game you will be best at, but we’ve noticed some trends. Furthermore, they also have an advantage with the technical and/or people aspects of the best online poker. The technical aspects refer to taking advantage of poker ‘math,’ such as mastering pot odds and playing tight. The people aspects refer to skills such as bluffing and varying your style of play poker. Here is what we believe certain games reward the most:

Longhand Limit Hold’em

Limit Hold’em rewards technical skills, especially patience and an understanding of hand value. Since many hands go to a showdown, reading one’s opponent only helps so much because it is harder to bluff and pot odds will often make a river fold highly risky.

Shorthand Limit Hold’em

Shorthand requires a mix of people and technical skills. People skills are important at analyzing a shorthanded game. You must understand your players and figure out which type of game to play. Often, a very aggressive form is best. However, in a loose game, you should revert to a standard online poker India strategy. Thus, once you analyzed the game using people skills, technical skills will be rewarded because one type of ‘technique’ should be employed to beat the game.

No-Limit Hold’em

No-limit Hold’em also requires both technical proficiency and people skills. Technical skills will help you understand how much you should bet and how much you can tolerate calling. People skills will help you in a hand (by putting an opponent on his cards) and determine your general strategy. No-limit Hold’em fundamentally comes down to how people utilize aggressive betting. If people are meek, steal a lot of pots but fold if stern resistance comes to your bluffing. If people are being very loose, be patient and trap them. You should often be able to wipe them out in one hand.

As you can see, poker is about technical and player proficiency. If you are very good at remaining patient, playing quality hands, and playing pot odds, stick to limit Hold’em. If you excel at poker tournaments because you know how to deal with opponents, you want to be in shorthand or no-limit game.

Play Poker Online Strategy – Crucial Skill of Game Selection

Game selection is a critical skill at poker. While many new talented play poker online players strive to better their skills in order to win more, often the route to increased profits lays simply in choosing a better game to play.

When we refer to ‘game selection,’ we are not referring so much as the type of best online poker game, but rather the players in the poker game. You want to play in a poker game where you have an advantage over your opponents. No matter how good you are, if you play in a game filled with sharks, it is virtually impossible to make any money. The luck factor and the rake would make profits slim in the long run.

Now you know you need to find the game that is beatable, but how do you determine which game that is? There are several ways to quickly analyze your opponents to figure out if you should play in the game:

Know your opponents

First, you may just know the opponents. If you play at an online poker India room for a while, you will get to know the players. Either by keeping notes or just through memory, you will know who is strong and weak and who you understand the best.

Determine the flow of the game

Second, determine how loose-passive the game is. A game that is loose is good. This means the flop percentage is high and people will call you down with hands that really only can beat bluffs. A game that is passive is also good. This can be determined by how much raising occurs. If people won’t bet hard when they have very good hands, they will let you draw out on them and let you get away with only small losses on your losing hands. Fundamentally, the two work well together because the loose game lets you win big pots when you have your made hand and you are aggressive and the passive game lets you draw cheaply and have small losses on losing hands.

Notice the basic mistakes made by players

Finally, notice the number of fundamental mistakes people make. After reading this, you will hopefully have a good idea about poker tournaments fundamentals. If you notice people calling with K4 offsuit and drawing to inside straights without pot odds, the game is good. People who often call with poor starting hands and draws without pot odds are doomed to lose.

Online Poker Strategy – The Virtues of Patience in the Game

In Hold’em online poker game, patience is a virtue. Wait for good starting hands and then play them aggressively. But avoid getting trapped because you played a troublesome hand from early position, and then are forced to call a raise with a hand you suspect might not be the best hand even if the flop hits it. Remember: if you lose or lack patience you’ll stray far afield from your goal of selectivity.

As a concept, patience is certainly related to the “be selective” portion of the “be selective; be aggressive ” mantra. Just how selective you should be can vary, however, depending on the texture of the game and your current online poker table image. You’ll find more on table image in the article titled “Coping When It All Goes Wrong” that is part of this series. For now, let’s talk about patience as it relates to “be selective; be aggressive.”

Although few players you come in contact with will dispute the need to play the best online poker, what most players consider selective and what you should consider selective are two entirely different things.

Players fond of high hands

Many poker games online players are fond of high hands from early position, regardless of how aggressive the game might be. They’ll raise without hesitating. After all, in their value system, any two cards ten-or-above are powerful holdings, and worth getting involved with regardless of the circumstances.

Trust us on this one. If you’re holding either of those two hands, and someone raises, do you think you have the best hand and are a favorite? Probably not, and you should throw away those hands before cold-calling a raise for two bets. You shouldn’t be any more confident either, if you called one bet, were raised by a player to your left, and had to call that raise before seeing the flop.

When you call a raise and the flop misses you entirely, that’s not much of a problem. While it might cost two bets, it’s a hand that’s easy to get away from. The real problem arises when you catch part of the flop. Suppose you called a raise and the flop contains a king. Now the raiser bets. Do you like your hand? It’s a tough call precisely because you really don’t have much to go on when you try to decide whether you have the best hand.

When he came out betting, your opponent may have been bluffing with a hand like A-Q or semi-bluffing with J-J, but he might also have a hand like A-K. You can’t be sure what he has, and consequently no idea about where you stand in relation to your opponent.

Bluffing – the ultimate strategy

If your opponent holds a king, his kicker is likely to be better than yours, since you can be fairly sure he didn’t raise before the flop with K-9. If you have a hand like K-T and your opponent holds K-Q or A-K, other than some odd flops that will result in a split pot or a miracle flop that gives you a straight, there are only three cards in the deck that can win it for you.

Yet many players in your game probably treat K-T as though it were a top-notch hand. It’s not. Sure, it’s a hand you should see the flop with if you’re in late position and no one has raised. In fact, if you are in late position and no one has called the blinds, it’s frequently a raising hand. But it is not a hand you can cold-call a raise with, nor is it a hand you can comfortably play poker from the early position if you are in a game where frequent raises are the rule rather than the exception.

It is a troublesome hand. So are hands like A-J, A-T, Q-J, Q-T, J-T, and A-x suited? While they have their place in your repertoire of playable hands, they are hands that have to be played carefully. This is where patience is a virtue in your poker playing strategy. If you play these hands indiscriminately, they will put a dent in your bankroll. While they may look good to many Hold’em players, when you are dealt these hands in the wrong position, or in a ram-and-jam game, you need the patience and discipline to throw them away.

Happy playing!

Poker Online – Strategic Advantages of Blinds

For Hold’em players the blinds are as unavoidable as death, taxes, and bad beats – just a consequence of life at the poker online table. How you play the blinds, however, will have a large bearing on your success at the game.

Small blind:

In Hold’em and Omaha, this is the mandatory bet required of the player to the left of the dealer.

The big blind (limit poker):

In poker games online using a blind to put money in play, the big blind is generally equal to the lower amount of the stakes for that game. The big blind follows the small blind, which is put up by the first player to the left of the dealer.

When the pot has not been raised:

One of the advantages of being the big blind of the best online poker is in a situation when the pot remains unraised. You’ve gotten to see the flop for free and might just flop a huge hand with two cards you otherwise might never have played. When you’re in the small blind, you can get to see the flop for half a bet, or one-third of the bet, depending on the game structure

Holding a big hand in the blind:

Every so often you’ll be dealt a pair of aces, kings or queens, or A-K in the blind. There are some players who automatically raise with these hands, regardless of any previous action. Players who routinely do this give their opponents too much information. By raising from the blind, you are announcing to the table that you have an exceptional hand. Not just a good hand, a great one. Most players in low- to mid-limit games are not going to release a big pair unless the board overtly threatens a straight or flush, and there are a bet and a raise in front of them. Take advantage of this tendency by check-raising your opponent from the blind when you know he plans to bet a hand you can beat.

Marginal hands in the blind:

Most of the time you’ll be dealt marginal hands in the blind. If you’re in the big blind, and there is no raise in front of you, simply check when it’s your turn to act and hope the flop is favorable. If there is a raise, you’ll have to carefully consider whether to call or toss your hand away. When you’re in the small blind, you need an even stronger hand to call a raise, since it will cost you more than half a bet. In most games, it will cost you a bet and a half to call a raise from the small blind.

Considerations in the small blind:

Even though it costs only a half bet to call from the small blind when the pot hasn’t been raised, you still shouldn’t call with just any hand. Unless you have a really good hand – the kind which plays well from early position – you need to limit your calls to those hands which offer real potential for improvement. If you’re playing in a game where the small blind is two-thirds of the big blind, you can play just about any hand from the small blind in an unraised pot. Just be prepared to throw most of your hands away on the flop, it’s one of the disadvantages of this position that you have to accept as part of the game.

Raising in the small blind:

If you’re dealt a big pair or A-K in the small blind, and there aren’t many callers, a raise might prevent the big blind from playing, unless he also has a very good hand. Any rational player respects a raise from the small blind. If you’re in the small blind and only one opponent called from late position, you can occasionally raise regardless of what you’re holding. If any big cards flop, your bet stands a good chance of eliminating your opponent. Since your opponent only called from late position, it’s difficult to credit him with big cards and he’s likely to fold in the face of a bet. This is not a tactic you can use routinely, however, since anyone who is observant will simply take note of your behavior and soon begin re-raising you.

Poker Online – Advanced No-Limit Strategy

The skill involved with No-Limit games is tremendous, even seasoned professionals admit that they still have a lot to learn at No-Limit Hold’em. However, don’t let this scare you; No-Limit Hold’em is, in our opinion, the most fun of all poker online games as well. It can also be profitable, sometimes even for beginners.

After playing No-Limit extensively online, we’ve noticed that the keys to winning No-Limit are one’s knowledge of the online poker game and his ability to adapt to his opponents’ knowledge. You must know what your skills are at No-Limit; what stages of the game you have mastered. Once you realize how you are good at No-Limit, you must then apply this to how badly others at your table play No-Limit.

For the sake of simplicity, we are going to divide the skills of No-Limit into several stages. After mastering each of these stages, the best online poker player can expect his/her profit potential at No-Limit to increase.

1.Pot odds

You must understand what odds you are getting if you call a bet with a draw. Since you can determine the size of the bet (it’s not fixed), you should know if you are getting or giving good odds to someone.

As basic as this may be, many No-Limit players have not even mastered this stage! So, if you are still insecure about pot odds, don’t worry. Many others are too and often they don’t even realize it.

2.Realizing the differences between Limit and No-Limit

Check-raising for value is far less valuable in No-Limit than Limit because you may be giving your opponent’s a deadly free card. In Limit poker games online, if you have the second-best hand, you will lose a little bit. In No-Limit, you could lose your entire stack.

3.Aggression

Betting is far better than calling in No-Limit. When you bet, you can win if you have the better hand or if your opponent folds. If you call, you can only win if you have your opponent beaten. If you bet, you determine the best size. You determine the pot odds. If you call, you are accepting someone else’s odds.

If you bet, you force people to pay off when you have a good hand. If you are a caller, you have to hope someone else will willingly pay you off. The importance of aggression is why tight-passive players can win a lot more at Limit than No-Limit.

4.Quick Adjustment

Different types of games require different amounts of aggression. Shorter games require one to be looser and more aggressive. However, if you’re up against many loose opponents, you must tighten up and wait until you have a strong hand. Generally, the opposite of what the game is does well. If the game is very loose, tighten up. If the game is very tight, take advantage and steal pots.

You also must adjust to your opponent’s quality. If you are up against weak players, simply giving them bad pot odds and taking money from them bit by bit works well. If you are against better players, you must set some traps.

5. Reading skills

Getting an idea of your opponent’s cards is very important. This takes time and experience.

6.Psychology and Traps

Once you hold the whopper and your opponent also has a good hand, what’s the best way to double through him? Learning to get out of and set traps is very difficult and the only experience will help in this department.

Fundamentally, game psychology and traps are used to manipulate the three questions mentioned earlier. Generally, this sort of game psychology is to only be used on good players (players that have mastered the first 4 steps). Against weaker players, you should just build a good hand and extract money out of them bit by bit. Weaker plays just play their hand; they don’t think about what you have.

Poker Online – A Short Guide to Basic Odds

Poker Online Strategy – Thinking Like a Poker Player

Poker pros are commonly described as tight and aggressive: “These poker online pros do not play many hands, but when they play them, they play them like they had the nuts.”

That’s a nice general description, but it doesn’t say much. And it’s not even totally right about no-limit games, as a solid loose, aggressive player is a person to be feared. Thus, when we think people say a player is tight/aggressive and therefore good, we really think they mean that the player has mastered four critical elements of online poker.

#1. Math skills

Best online poker players know general percentages. They know that you have about 1 in 8 chance of hitting a set when holding a pocket pair and that you have about a 1 in 3 chance of completing a flush draw at the flop.

They know the importance of ‘outs.’ Outs are simply the number of cards that will improve your hand. Count your outs, multiply them by two, and add two, and that’s roughly the percentage shot you have at hitting.

They can figure out the ‘pot odds.’ Knowing outs is meaningless unless it’s translated into rational, calculated betting.

Knowing you have a 20% chance of hitting, what do you do then? Well, simply once you figure out your chance of hitting/winning, you divide the size of the pot at the river (i.e. the current pot plus the amount of money that you think will be added through future bets) by the amount you have to put in. If you have a 20% chance of hitting and the best to you is 50, if the pot at the river will be greater than 250, call. If not, fold.

Math skills are the most basic knowledge. The purpose of this book is not to go over pot odds, implied odds, etc. That’s day one reading. Anyone who doesn’t understand these concepts should not poker games online in a game until they do.

#2. Discipline

Good poker players demand an advantage. What separates a winning poker player from a fish is that a fish does not expect to win, while a poker player does. A fish is happy playing craps, roulette, the slots; he just hopes to get lucky. A poker player does not hope to get lucky; he just hopes others don’t get lucky.

Good poker players understand that a different game requires a different discipline. A disciplined no-limit player can be a foolish limit player and vice versa. A disciplined limit player is always a very tight preflop. He or she will not play too many hands, only the ones that have a very good chance at winning.

However, a disciplined no-limit player is VERY different. This player is not so concerned with paying too many blinds; instead, he or she does not want to get trapped. The main difference between a disciplined limit and no-limit player is that the limit player avoids piddling away his stack bit by bit while a disciplined no-limit player avoids losing his whole stack in one hand. Hence, a disciplined no-limit player can play a lot of hands. Preflop, he or she can be as loose as ‘that’ girl in the office. However, a good no-limit player knows when to toss hands that will get him or her in trouble.

A disciplined player knows when to play and when to quit. He recognizes when he is on tilt and is aware when a game is too juicy to just quit while ahead.

A disciplined player knows that he is not perfect. When a disciplined player makes a mistake, he learns. He does not blame others. He does not cry. He learns from the mistake and moves on.

#3. Psychological Skills

A good player is not a self-centered player. He may be the biggest SOB you know. He may not talk about care about anyone but himself and may enjoy stealing food from the poor. However, when a poker pro walks into a poker room, he always empathizes with his opponents. He tries to think about what they think and understand the decisions they make and why they make them.

Good poker players know that psychology is much, much, much more important in a no-limit game than in a limited one. Limit games often turn into math battles, while no-limit games carry a strong psychology component. We would NEVER play against a solid computer ‘bot’ in a limit game. However, in a no-limit game, that bot would be toast.

#4. A Clear Understanding of Risk-vs-Reward

Pot odds and demanding an advantage fall into this category. Poker players are willing to take a long-shot risk if the reward is high enough, but only if the expected return is higher than the risk.

More importantly, they understand the risk-vs-reward nature of the game outside of the actual poker room. They know how many banks they need to play poker online, and how much money they need in reserve to cover other expenses in life.

Happy playing!

Poker Online – Beating Fish in the Poker Games

Poker is a game of strategy. However, what is the most frustrating thing in poker online games? It is the moment when you lose to the bad players.

If you get frustrated or annoyed when a bad player wins hands against you, it’s not your fault. Much of the problem comes from letting these bad beats get to you, causing you to play poker badly.

Let us take a look at the bad players whom we call FISH we face at the online poker table.

The overaggressive fish

This is the type of maniac who loves to sit down, start raising immediately (especially preflop) and create some general havoc for the entire table. He can often be tricky and he’s usually very tough to put on any kind of hand. we have noticed that some people like to keep their distance from this person, sit as far away as possible and react to what he does.

However, we have found that the best way to handle this type at the higher stakes is to sit down at the seat to his immediate left. Why? This allows you the option to put pressure against the maniac (and EXTREME pressure on the rest of the table) by re-raising him pre-flop at every opportunity. This strategy is NOT for the faint of heart, and it does not work very well at lower limit tables if the people will happily limp in for two or three bets anyway. But if you can succeed in eliminating the field this way, you will often find yourself with the best hand AND position on the maniac going into the flop, putting you at a distinct advantage in online poker India.

It’s difficult to pinpoint how far we will lower the quality of my starting hands with which to make this play; we have been known to re-raise with something like K9 if the maniac is extremely wild and we know that there’s a good chance that those mediocre cards will be a monster compared to his holding. Another benefit of three-betting him often is that you will really annoy the rest of the table (and they’ll likely start to press their luck to compensate.) Sometimes the whole table will then go on tilt, and you can reap the rewards if you continue to play such a controlled-aggressive strategy.

The limper fish

Here is a player who will hold on to his hand for dear life; you’d have a tough time getting him to fold without prying his cards away with a crowbar. He’s usually involved in the action and he slowly gives away his chips until he finally hits his three-outer and scoops a decent pot against a newly-enraged opponent. This kind of poker games online player will practically force you to play better cards because you’re more likely to have to win a showdown against him.

If he is sitting behind you, you’ll have to think twice before trying to raise pre-flop with a hand like 99 because you know that he is likely to call two bets anyway with his K8s (thus leading to you being out of position with your 99 and against maybe three opponents…not a good situation at all!) Since a limper will often create a domino-limping effect around the table, we prefer to toss most marginal hands (such as KJ in bad position) and focus on either big cards or drawing hands. When you’re in a hand with the limper, it’s also vital to avoid slow-playing as much.

The predictable fish

Pre-flop, he ALWAYS raises with QQ, calls with 66 or A-10, and folds rags (regardless of his position or what the table conditions are like.) He stays in when he flops a draw and folds when the flop misses him. He slowplays sets but raises the top pair on the flop. He calls the turn with the second pair and raises on the river if his hand improves. Sensing a trend here? 🙂 While this type of fish will not fill your pockets as quickly as the first two types, you can still grind away against him without incurring a lot of risks. When he raises, you can fold your second pair on the turn or your 77 preflop. You can also try fancier bluffs against him because he will quickly fold a questionable hand if you show aggression at the right time.

Happy playing!
