Poker Online – Advanced No-Limit Strategy

The skill involved with No-Limit games is tremendous, even seasoned professionals admit that they still have a lot to learn at No-Limit Hold’em. However, don’t let this scare you; No-Limit Hold’em is, in our opinion, the most fun of all poker online games as well. It can also be profitable, sometimes even for beginners.

After playing No-Limit extensively online, we’ve noticed that the keys to winning No-Limit are one’s knowledge of the online poker game and his ability to adapt to his opponents’ knowledge. You must know what your skills are at No-Limit; what stages of the game you have mastered. Once you realize how you are good at No-Limit, you must then apply this to how badly others at your table play No-Limit.

For the sake of simplicity, we are going to divide the skills of No-Limit into several stages. After mastering each of these stages, the best online poker player can expect his/her profit potential at No-Limit to increase.

1.Pot odds

You must understand what odds you are getting if you call a bet with a draw. Since you can determine the size of the bet (it’s not fixed), you should know if you are getting or giving good odds to someone.

As basic as this may be, many No-Limit players have not even mastered this stage! So, if you are still insecure about pot odds, don’t worry. Many others are too and often they don’t even realize it.

2.Realizing the differences between Limit and No-Limit

Check-raising for value is far less valuable in No-Limit than Limit because you may be giving your opponent’s a deadly free card. In Limit poker games online, if you have the second-best hand, you will lose a little bit. In No-Limit, you could lose your entire stack.

3.Aggression

Betting is far better than calling in No-Limit. When you bet, you can win if you have the better hand or if your opponent folds. If you call, you can only win if you have your opponent beaten. If you bet, you determine the best size. You determine the pot odds. If you call, you are accepting someone else’s odds.

If you bet, you force people to pay off when you have a good hand. If you are a caller, you have to hope someone else will willingly pay you off. The importance of aggression is why tight-passive players can win a lot more at Limit than No-Limit.

4.Quick Adjustment

Different types of games require different amounts of aggression. Shorter games require one to be looser and more aggressive. However, if you’re up against many loose opponents, you must tighten up and wait until you have a strong hand. Generally, the opposite of what the game is does well. If the game is very loose, tighten up. If the game is very tight, take advantage and steal pots.

You also must adjust to your opponent’s quality. If you are up against weak players, simply giving them bad pot odds and taking money from them bit by bit works well. If you are against better players, you must set some traps.

5. Reading skills

Getting an idea of your opponent’s cards is very important. This takes time and experience.

6.Psychology and Traps

Once you hold the whopper and your opponent also has a good hand, what’s the best way to double through him? Learning to get out of and set traps is very difficult and the only experience will help in this department.

Fundamentally, game psychology and traps are used to manipulate the three questions mentioned earlier. Generally, this sort of game psychology is to only be used on good players (players that have mastered the first 4 steps). Against weaker players, you should just build a good hand and extract money out of them bit by bit. Weaker plays just play their hand; they don’t think about what you have.

Poker Online Strategy – Thinking Like a Poker Player

Poker pros are commonly described as tight and aggressive: “These poker online pros do not play many hands, but when they play them, they play them like they had the nuts.”

That’s a nice general description, but it doesn’t say much. And it’s not even totally right about no-limit games, as a solid loose, aggressive player is a person to be feared. Thus, when we think people say a player is tight/aggressive and therefore good, we really think they mean that the player has mastered four critical elements of online poker.

#1. Math skills

Best online poker players know general percentages. They know that you have about 1 in 8 chance of hitting a set when holding a pocket pair and that you have about a 1 in 3 chance of completing a flush draw at the flop.

They know the importance of ‘outs.’ Outs are simply the number of cards that will improve your hand. Count your outs, multiply them by two, and add two, and that’s roughly the percentage shot you have at hitting.

They can figure out the ‘pot odds.’ Knowing outs is meaningless unless it’s translated into rational, calculated betting.

Knowing you have a 20% chance of hitting, what do you do then? Well, simply once you figure out your chance of hitting/winning, you divide the size of the pot at the river (i.e. the current pot plus the amount of money that you think will be added through future bets) by the amount you have to put in. If you have a 20% chance of hitting and the best to you is 50, if the pot at the river will be greater than 250, call. If not, fold.

Math skills are the most basic knowledge. The purpose of this book is not to go over pot odds, implied odds, etc. That’s day one reading. Anyone who doesn’t understand these concepts should not poker games online in a game until they do.

#2. Discipline

Good poker players demand an advantage. What separates a winning poker player from a fish is that a fish does not expect to win, while a poker player does. A fish is happy playing craps, roulette, the slots; he just hopes to get lucky. A poker player does not hope to get lucky; he just hopes others don’t get lucky.

Good poker players understand that a different game requires a different discipline. A disciplined no-limit player can be a foolish limit player and vice versa. A disciplined limit player is always a very tight preflop. He or she will not play too many hands, only the ones that have a very good chance at winning.

However, a disciplined no-limit player is VERY different. This player is not so concerned with paying too many blinds; instead, he or she does not want to get trapped. The main difference between a disciplined limit and no-limit player is that the limit player avoids piddling away his stack bit by bit while a disciplined no-limit player avoids losing his whole stack in one hand. Hence, a disciplined no-limit player can play a lot of hands. Preflop, he or she can be as loose as ‘that’ girl in the office. However, a good no-limit player knows when to toss hands that will get him or her in trouble.

A disciplined player knows when to play and when to quit. He recognizes when he is on tilt and is aware when a game is too juicy to just quit while ahead.

A disciplined player knows that he is not perfect. When a disciplined player makes a mistake, he learns. He does not blame others. He does not cry. He learns from the mistake and moves on.

#3. Psychological Skills

A good player is not a self-centered player. He may be the biggest SOB you know. He may not talk about care about anyone but himself and may enjoy stealing food from the poor. However, when a poker pro walks into a poker room, he always empathizes with his opponents. He tries to think about what they think and understand the decisions they make and why they make them.

Good poker players know that psychology is much, much, much more important in a no-limit game than in a limited one. Limit games often turn into math battles, while no-limit games carry a strong psychology component. We would NEVER play against a solid computer ‘bot’ in a limit game. However, in a no-limit game, that bot would be toast.

#4. A Clear Understanding of Risk-vs-Reward

Pot odds and demanding an advantage fall into this category. Poker players are willing to take a long-shot risk if the reward is high enough, but only if the expected return is higher than the risk.

More importantly, they understand the risk-vs-reward nature of the game outside of the actual poker room. They know how many banks they need to play poker online, and how much money they need in reserve to cover other expenses in life.

Poker Online – Beating Fish in the Poker Games

Poker is a game of strategy. However, what is the most frustrating thing in poker online games? It is the moment when you lose to the bad players.

If you get frustrated or annoyed when a bad player wins hands against you, it’s not your fault. Much of the problem comes from letting these bad beats get to you, causing you to play poker badly.

Let us take a look at the bad players whom we call FISH we face at the online poker table.

The overaggressive fish

This is the type of maniac who loves to sit down, start raising immediately (especially preflop) and create some general havoc for the entire table. He can often be tricky and he’s usually very tough to put on any kind of hand. we have noticed that some people like to keep their distance from this person, sit as far away as possible and react to what he does.

However, we have found that the best way to handle this type at the higher stakes is to sit down at the seat to his immediate left. Why? This allows you the option to put pressure against the maniac (and EXTREME pressure on the rest of the table) by re-raising him pre-flop at every opportunity. This strategy is NOT for the faint of heart, and it does not work very well at lower limit tables if the people will happily limp in for two or three bets anyway. But if you can succeed in eliminating the field this way, you will often find yourself with the best hand AND position on the maniac going into the flop, putting you at a distinct advantage in online poker India.

It’s difficult to pinpoint how far we will lower the quality of my starting hands with which to make this play; we have been known to re-raise with something like K9 if the maniac is extremely wild and we know that there’s a good chance that those mediocre cards will be a monster compared to his holding. Another benefit of three-betting him often is that you will really annoy the rest of the table (and they’ll likely start to press their luck to compensate.) Sometimes the whole table will then go on tilt, and you can reap the rewards if you continue to play such a controlled-aggressive strategy.

The limper fish

Here is a player who will hold on to his hand for dear life; you’d have a tough time getting him to fold without prying his cards away with a crowbar. He’s usually involved in the action and he slowly gives away his chips until he finally hits his three-outer and scoops a decent pot against a newly-enraged opponent. This kind of poker games online player will practically force you to play better cards because you’re more likely to have to win a showdown against him.

If he is sitting behind you, you’ll have to think twice before trying to raise pre-flop with a hand like 99 because you know that he is likely to call two bets anyway with his K8s (thus leading to you being out of position with your 99 and against maybe three opponents…not a good situation at all!) Since a limper will often create a domino-limping effect around the table, we prefer to toss most marginal hands (such as KJ in bad position) and focus on either big cards or drawing hands. When you’re in a hand with the limper, it’s also vital to avoid slow-playing as much.

The predictable fish

Pre-flop, he ALWAYS raises with QQ, calls with 66 or A-10, and folds rags (regardless of his position or what the table conditions are like.) He stays in when he flops a draw and folds when the flop misses him. He slowplays sets but raises the top pair on the flop. He calls the turn with the second pair and raises on the river if his hand improves. Sensing a trend here? 🙂 While this type of fish will not fill your pockets as quickly as the first two types, you can still grind away against him without incurring a lot of risks. When he raises, you can fold your second pair on the turn or your 77 preflop. You can also try fancier bluffs against him because he will quickly fold a questionable hand if you show aggression at the right time.

Poker Online Basics – Understanding Misdeals in Poker

The term ‘misdeal’ is often used to describe a mistake on the part of the dealer in the poker online game which results in the cards being dealt in an incorrect manner. The result of misdeal is that cards have to be returned to dealer for being dealt once again. The cards are first shuffled once more, a new hand is started, with players receiving a new set of cards.

For the mistake to be caught it is mandatory that it has been recognized. And brought to notice prior to more than one player having already made a move. The misdeal should be declared before any two players have begun to use the cards that they have received. In this post we shall discuss some of the circumstances which are categorized as misdeals in an online poker game.

One of the primary causes behind a misdeal occurs if the dealer unknowingly reveals two or more  playing cards. Since best online poker cards have to be dealt in secrecy, that is, no player should be aware of the cards being held by another player, revealing the cards can prove to hold up the game. Also, another error concerning cards being revealed occurs if the dealer reveals the first or the second card of the deck by wrongly dealing them such that they face upwards on the table.

A flawed number of cards

If a player receives an erroneous number of cards, it is classified as an error. However, there is an exception to this rule which occurs in case one of the players receives an extra card. This turns out to be the highest card in the game. The player is allowed to retain this card if he has been dealt the card in keeping with proper sequence of dealing.

In case the misdeal occurs in the form of a card being handed out to a player out of turn. That is, not in proper sequence of dealing, wrongly dealt card can be replaced using burn card. However, the burn card cannot be used to cover a misdeal. If the error in question involves a card being revealed.

Extra cards are outcome of misdeal

Another misdeal occurs if two or more than two cards have been dealt as extras. That is, if more than two cards have been dealt in excess at the beginning of the game. And this error is called to attention, it is declared to be a misdeal. Also, if more than one card if found to be in a ‘boxed’ position. Which is to say, facing one another, instead of all in one direction, it is said to be a misdeal.

Also, in case a player who is entitled to receive a hand is not present at the table, the dealer cannot deal a hand out for him or her as it is considered to be an ‘empty seat’. If the player wishes to be included in the game and will return, he or she is expected to leave a blind or an ante.

In online poker tournaments, misdeals occur all of the time, but even at a real casino, you’ll see misdeals happen every once in a while. Accept it as they’re part of the game.

Mistakes Players make in Poker Online Tells

The game of poker online is challenging! It involves an easy blend of poker skills and luck to play the game. Knowing how to read your opponents around the table is critical if you want to be the last player standing. If you really don’t know anything about your opponents then what will be better is that you write some checks, distribute them, and save everyone their time.

Poker tells are very dangerous. You might not know how yours is giving you away. They are very dangerous because most of the time, players who really study them wind up losing a lot of money because they don’t know how to use the information. Here are some mistakes when it comes to the best online poker tells.

Being too proud

When you know a thing or two about online poker tells, the best thing to do is just shut up and play. One big blunder you can make is to show pride in any good knowledge or mastery of reading poker tells.

When you see something wrong with your opponent, zip it. The biggest mistake you can do is blurt out what your opponent has revealed and then act on it. It is an ego boost for sure but your opponent also learns and will avoid the same mistake the rest of the game. Never brag.

Looking for phantom tells

Do not be too paranoid and consider every gesture of your opponent as the best online poker tell. You will see unreliable tells in most hands. You will see phantom tells which really does not mean anything and it will cost you a lot of money if you will be governed by them. Keep on looking for real poker tells.

You react too soon

When you observe an online poker India tell, it will be a mistake to act too quickly. Hesitate for a bit and ponder. Act based on what you just saw reluctantly. This way your opponent will not link your decision to a possible read that you just made, and will not fix it through the game.

Poker Online Strategy – Playing the Mind Games

No-Limit Hold’em ring games require more psychological and bluffing skills than any other popularly played poker online game. However, you should only use these tools based on the type of opponent you’re playing.

If you are playing a lower-stakes No-Limit online poker, we wouldn’t suggest using psychological tools much. An occasional flop bluff against few opponents may be profitable, but these opponents will frequently pay off their whole stack on hands as low as the second pair. In these games, you should just wait, make a good hand, and then ream your opponents with pot-sized bets.

Once you play poker games online in a higher stakes game, mind games will play a larger factor, especially if people’s stacks are deep. However, the first thing you need to do is categorize each of your opponents you are facing:

Fish

These guys are just playing their hands, not yours. If you bet big and they have a bad hand, they will fold. If you bet big and they have top pair, they will call provided you do not do something scary like put them all in. They will not bluff much at you.

Weak-tight

These guys also just poker games online their hand but will call less than the fish. They are not willing to lose all of their chips on top pair unless they think you are a maniac. Bluff these guys out of a good number of pots (but not much so that they will attempt to trap you later on).

The Sheriff

These guys are similar to fish but understand the game enough to where they know when the only thing, they can beat is a bluff. However, they often think you are bluffing and will call you down.

Tight-aggressive

These are your tactically sound players. However, their No-Limit ability differs largely based on how well they read their opponents. In general, they are much more eager to bet at the pot than call. Against these players, changing pace is necessary. You should occasionally trap these players with strong hands and occasionally go over the top at them. By continually changing pace, you may be able to bully them into becoming too ‘weak-tight’ or by becoming a sheriff. Notice which direction they are going into and then take advantage of that strategy.

Hyper-aggressive

These guys like to bet and raise. It’s almost impossible to tell if they are bluffing or have the nuts a lot of the time. These players can be dangerous, but you need to make an effort to trap them. While it is good to ‘test’ them by raising them, do not always do this with a hand because it will become a clear signal to them. Do not let these guys know what you have by raising. Play your hands differently and certainly trap them sometimes when you have a strong hand like a set.

Tilting players

Whatever set these guys off, these guys are on tilt. They’re going to bet all of their chips in. The best strategy here is to just let them do the betting because they may fold if you do it and they have nothing.

Happy playing!

Online Poker Strategy – Thinking Like a Poker Player

Good poker players demand an advantage. What separates a winning poker player from a fish is that a fish does not expect to win, while a poker player does. A fish is happy playing craps, roulette, the slots; he just hopes to get lucky. A poker player does not hope to get lucky; he just hopes others don’t get lucky.

However, when a poker pro walks into a poker room, he always empathizes with his opponents. He tries to think about what they think and understand the decisions they make and why they make them. The poker pro always tries to have an answer to these questions:

  1. what does my opponent have?
  2. what does my opponent think I have?
  3. what does my opponent think I think he has?

Knowing the answer to these questions is the first step, manipulating the answers is the second and more important step. If you have a pair of kings and your foe has a pair of aces, and you both know what each other have and both know that you each know what the other has, why poker games online? A poker pro manipulates the latter two answers by slowplaying, fast-playing, and bluffing in order to throw his opponent off.

Good poker players know that psychology is much, much, much more important in a no-limit game than in a limited one. Limit games often turn into math battles, while no-limit games carry a strong psychology component.

They know how many banks they need to play, and how much money they need in reserve to cover other expenses in life.
