Poker Online Strategy – Playing the Mind Games

No-Limit Hold’em ring games require more psychological and bluffing skills than any other popularly played poker online game. However, you should only use these tools based on the type of opponent you’re playing.

If you are playing a lower-stakes No-Limit online poker, we wouldn’t suggest using psychological tools much. An occasional flop bluff against few opponents may be profitable, but these opponents will frequently pay off their whole stack on hands as low as the second pair. In these games, you should just wait, make a good hand, and then ream your opponents with pot-sized bets.

Once you play poker games online in a higher stakes game, mind games will play a larger factor, especially if people’s stacks are deep. However, the first thing you need to do is categorize each of your opponents you are facing:

These guys are just playing their hands, not yours. If you bet big and they have a bad hand, they will fold. If you bet big and they have top pair, they will call provided you do not do something scary like put them all in. They will not bluff much at you.

These guys also just poker games online their hand but will call less than the fish. They are not willing to lose all of their chips on top pair unless they think you are a maniac. Bluff these guys out of a good number of pots (but not much so that they will attempt to trap you later on).

The Sheriff

These guys are similar to fish but understand the game enough to where they know when the only thing, they can beat is a bluff. However, they often think you are bluffing and will call you down.

These are your tactically sound players. However, their No-Limit ability differs largely based on how well they read their opponents. In general, they are much more eager to bet at the pot than call. Against these players, changing pace is necessary. You should occasionally trap these players with strong hands and occasionally go over the top at them. By continually changing pace, you may be able to bully them into becoming too ‘weak-tight’ or by becoming a sheriff. Notice which direction they are going into and then take advantage of that strategy.

These guys like to bet and raise. It’s almost impossible to tell if they are bluffing or have the nuts a lot of the time. These players can be dangerous, but you need to make an effort to trap them. While it is good to ‘test’ them by raising them, do not always do this with a hand because it will become a clear signal to them. Do not let these guys know what you have by raising. Play your hands differently and certainly trap them sometimes when you have a strong hand like a set.

Tilting players

Whatever set these guys off, these guys are on tilt. They’re going to bet all of their chips in. The best strategy here is to just let them do the betting because they may fold if you do it and they have nothing.

Online Poker Strategy – Thinking Like a Poker Player

Online poker pros are commonly described as tight and aggressive: “These poker pros do not play many hands, but when they play them, they play them like they had the nuts.”

That’s a nice general description, but it doesn’t say much. And it’s not even totally right about no-limit games, as a solid loose, aggressive player is a person to be feared. Thus, when we think people say a player is tight/aggressive and therefore good, we really think they mean that the player has mastered four critical elements of online poker.

#1. Math skills

Best online poker players know general percentages. They know that you have about 1 in 8 chance of hitting a set when holding a pocket pair and that you have about a 1 in 3 chance of completing a flush draw at the flop.

They know the importance of ‘outs.’ Outs are simply the number of cards that will improve your hand. Count your outs, multiply them by two, and add two, and that’s roughly the percentage shot you have at hitting.

They can figure out the ‘pot odds.’ Knowing outs is meaningless unless it’s translated into rational, calculated betting.

Knowing you have a 20% chance of hitting, what do you do then? Well, simply once you figure out your chance of hitting/winning, you divide the size of the pot at the river (i.e. the current pot plus the amount of money that you think will be added through future bets) by the amount you have to put in. If you have a 20% chance of hitting and the best to you is 50, if the pot at the river will be greater than 250, call. If not, fold.

Math skills are the most basic knowledge. The purpose of this book is not to go over pot odds, implied odds, etc. That’s day one reading. Anyone who doesn’t understand these concepts should not play in a game until they do.

#2. Discipline

Good poker players demand an advantage. What separates a winning poker player from a fish is that a fish does not expect to win, while a poker player does. A fish is happy playing craps, roulette, the slots; he just hopes to get lucky. A poker player does not hope to get lucky; he just hopes others don’t get lucky.

Good poker players understand that a different game requires a different discipline. A disciplined no-limit player can be a foolish limit player and vice versa. A disciplined limit player is always a very tight preflop. He or she will not play too many hands, only the ones that have a very good chance at winning.

However, a disciplined no-limit player is VERY different. This player is not so concerned with paying too many blinds; instead, he or she does not want to get trapped. The main difference between a disciplined limit and no-limit player is that the limit player avoids piddling away his stack bit by bit while a disciplined no-limit player avoids losing his whole stack in one hand. Hence, a disciplined no-limit player can play a lot of hands. Preflop, he or she can be as loose as ‘that’ girl in high school. However, a good no-limit player knows when to toss hands that will get him or her in trouble.

A disciplined player knows when to play and when to quit. He recognizes when he is on tilt and is aware when a game is too juicy to just quit while ahead.

A disciplined player knows that he is not perfect. When a disciplined player makes a mistake, he learns. He does not blame others. He does not cry. He learns from the mistake and moves on.

#3. Psychological Skills

A good player is not a self-centered player. He may be the biggest SOB you know. He may not talk about care about anyone but himself and may enjoy stealing food from the poor. However, when a poker pro walks into a poker room, he always empathizes with his opponents. He tries to think about what they think and understand the decisions they make and why they make them. The poker pro always tries to have an answer to these questions:

  1. what does my opponent have?
  2. what does my opponent think I have?
  3. what does my opponent think I think he has?

Knowing the answer to these questions is the first step, manipulating the answers is the second and more important step. If you have a pair of kings and your foe has a pair of aces, and you both know what each other have and both know that you each know what the other has, why poker games online? A poker pro manipulates the latter two answers by slowplaying, fast-playing, and bluffing in order to throw his opponent off.

Good poker players know that psychology is much, much, much more important in a no-limit game than in a limited one. Limit games often turn into math battles, while no-limit games carry a strong psychology component. However, in a no-limit game, that bot would be toast.

#4. A Clear Understanding of Risk-vs-Reward

Pot odds and demanding an advantage fall into this category. Poker players are willing to take a long-shot risk if the reward is high enough, but only if the expected return is higher than the risk.

More importantly, they understand the risk-vs-reward nature of the game outside of the actual poker room. They know how many banks they need to play, and how much money they need in reserve to cover other expenses in life.

Poker Online Tips from The Management and Behavior Experts

There is surely a science behind almost everything. Two things are essential for playing some winning poker online. One you need to get a feel of the math of the cards and seconds, you need to know how your opponents are thinking how they think you are thinking.

Some tips from known behavior and management experts will not really hurt. Let us see what they say about our favorite card game:

Betting with your best and worst hands

You will rake in more cash when you know how to capitalize on the weakness and mistakes of the other online poker India players. The dictum is that you need to know when to play your best and worst hands.

When you play aggressively with your best hand you want your opponents to think that you have a weak hand. Play your weak cards and make them see you as a strong contender for the chips. You need to push your opponents to the wall and make them commit some mistakes which spell profit for you.

Penalize your opponent’s when they do probability matching

Best online poker like other card games is a game of tendencies. Let us say you have 1 King and 3 Queens and you have to guess what you will pick next. Right now, you might say definitely Q but then that is not the case in real life when there is always the tendency to pick the lone K.

You need to know what your opponent’s tendency is. You need to see what his cutoff points are or which he considers unprofitable and which he considers worth betting. You need to remember that he will not strictly stick to this cutoff and for that, you can punish your opponents.

Try to open your calling range a bit and catch him when he isn’t playing his good hands much and playing his weak hands more.

Don’t ever show them what you are doing

Bad players of online poker India will most likely be bad players most of the time. But remember poker is all about information. Never ever give a hint of what you are doing to the other players if you don’t want the chips going down the drain.

Notice Little Tendencies of Players to Win a online poker Game

Back in the Brick-and-Mortar setting of poker game, you got a read on people, notice little tendencies and get a good feel for the action as time goes on. Online poker takes away that element, it is difficult to read an Avatar, ‘Is he thinking, or did he just take a bathroom break?’ you just never know why someone does what they do.

With that being said you can still learn to dominate while playing online, you need to be disciplined and play the odds more than the person. Once you start playing poker online you will be amazed at how many different styles you will see. Here’s how to categorize them.

The Ultra Aggressive:

Style: Try’s to steal blinds when he/she detects timid players by raising well above the table’s blinds, Raises almost all the time flop, turn, river. Will often join a table and go all-in, win and leave. This guy is all about immediacy; either win right away or leaves.

How To Play: Let this guy steal a couple of small pots, once he’s ahead he tends to get a little conservative, you can usually catch him/her with a strong commitment to a pot, be careful and don’t let your emotions get the better of you. If you have a strong hand it is generally worth the risk of matching his output

The Poker Pro:

Style: This person lets everyone know that they are the best online poker God; they are the ABC of poker and pretty much play by the book. This player will often explain to you why he/she bet the way they did and why you were an idiot for betting the way you did, spewing out odds and statistics to back up his/her claim. What cracks me up about the Pro is they tend to get highly upset upon discovering they were the victim of a Bad-Beat, they will often scold you via the chatbox and I am sure they are letting you know they think you are number-one while waving their finger at the monitor. If you caused this person to lose, when statistically they shouldn’t have, they will stay at the table until they are broke or have exacted their revenge!

How To Play: Do something stupid, let him think you’re a fish he/she won’t be able to resist proving to you how smart they are, and they are going to teach you a lesson. I usually slow play these guys and force their hand on the river. watch out for straights and flushes, I’ve lost more nuts to the river than I care to admit. Pro’s love to play those hands and will slow play with you because the value of the pot is worth slow playing with you.

Everyone’s Friend:

Style: Likes to chat with everyone, Tells everyone what a great hand they had or how well they played, etc. Usually, this person is a decent player, like the PRO they like to show off their knowledge of online poker real money jargon and are more likely to bluff every now and then, show their cards (just to show you how smart they are) then condescendingly apologize for the bad-beat.

How To Play: I get a little aggressive with this guy, he tends to the conservative side and generally won’t over-commit, but will ask you to show your cards, before he folds, never shows him your cards! You can usually distract him a little by indulging his need to chat.

Everyone’s Enemy:

Style: A step down on the evolutionary scale from the Ultra Aggressive, this player wants to pick a fight with anyone, usually a terrible player but for whatever reason gets lucky a lot. The enemy will play good hands or bad hands the same way, daring you to match his move, berating you if he wins and chastising you when he loses. Interestingly enough this player tends to control a table better than most getting people upset enough to not play their game. Heaven helps us if the Pro takes Enemy’s bankroll you will never hear the end of it.

How To Play: This guy is easy to beat, as soon as you have a good hand J’s or better, you probably will win, this guy will go all-in with High card or small pairs, even if you lose once you will more than likely get it back soon enough. Nothing upsets him more than you being non-responsive.

Silent but Deadly-Shark:

Style: Folds a lot of talks very little. In the online poker India world this guy generally wins the big money mainly because when they play a hand, they usually have a hand worth playing. They are the ones who usually bring down Ultra Aggressive and Enemy. Then go back to playing conservative waiting for their next fish to fry.

How To Play: Start out likes he’s a fish and you will generally win the first few matches, be wary when they bet according to pot size. Once I figured out that their good, I play conservatively than aggressive, altering my style as the table warrants, a good bluff every now and then keeps everyone honest, beating this guy is the best feeling when playing online

Silent but Deadly-Fish:

Style: Initially hard to determine if they are sharks or Fish. They start out the same as Shark but often under-bet or over-bet, thus never really winning but slowly losing. Eventually, Fish shows his/her colors and gets devoured.

How To Play: Just play smart poker, don’t devour this person, drain him/her slowly, you want them coming back for more, make them your buddy, greet them every time they join your table, remember eventually they will learn or leave.

Happy playing!
